Letter from the Birmingham Jail
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested in April 1963 for the crime of leading a civil rights demonstration without a parade permit. During the 14 days he spent in prison, King wrote the now-famous Letter from the Birmingham Jail in response to a group of white clergy who advised him to stop the demonstrations and wait peaceably for desegregation to happen.
King’s open letter response has been described as one of the most important historical documents penned by a modern political prisoner. Join us as we read excerpts from this famous letter, which is also considered one of the most important documents of the American civil rights movement.
