The People’s Church

Led by Rev. F. Vernon Wright V (he, him)

This Sunday, we will have a New Members’ Recognition service. After church, we will have our Annual Meeting. On June 1st, we will create a five-year vision. It’s a good time to consider what it truly means to be a church of the people.

Old habits die hard, however. For thousands of years, the Church in Western culture was run by usually well-connected aristocratic families who preserved classical culture and influenced nation states. Even in many churches with congregational polity, there is some conception of the “priesthood.”  Unitarian Universalists are no different, as we still require expensive, high-level clergy training. In many cases, the de facto reality is that the church belongs to the people, but the faith belongs to the clergy.

Murray is special, however. Your Religious Services committee actively recruits and engages church members and friends to volunteer in service projects or serve on committees, as well as preach and teach. Because I have one Sunday a month where I do not have to preach, this forces the congregation to take at least some responsibility for the messaging and service. I find that this enriches our worship together. Join us this Sunday as we celebrate being a church of the people!

Service begins at 10 a.m. This is a hybrid service. Join us in the sanctuary or log on to Zoom from the comfort and safety of your own home to be a part of our worship experience. Service ends at 11 a.m., followed by coffee and fellowship.

We are a certified Welcoming Congregation and Green Sanctuary
