Love’s Power: Mindfulness and Justice

This Sunday, because of the snowstorm, join us remotely on Zoom, as we explore the depths of mindfulness and love, and discover how they connect us, not just to each other, but to the world around us.

Valentine’s Day often evokes images of romantic love, of that special someone who sets our hearts aflutter. But what if we broadened our understanding of love? What if we saw it as a universal force connecting us all, a force that empowers us to create a more just and compassionate world?

Mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn beautifully describes mindfulness as “falling in love with each moment.” By being truly present, we cultivate a loving awareness of ourselves, others, and the world we inhabit.

But love is not merely a passive feeling. It calls us to action. As Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. profoundly stated, “Love without power is nostalgia, power without love is tyranny.” True love actively pursues justice. It challenges us to step beyond the traditional view of love as a solely personal emotion and recognize its potential to ignite social change. Dr. King’s words remind us that love can be a powerful catalyst, driving us to strive for equality, fairness, and the well-being of all.

This Sunday, we’ll delve into the interconnectedness of personal and universal love. We’ll see how our love for individuals can open a window to a boundless, universal love that unites us all. And we’ll explore how this universal love can fuel our efforts towards a more just and compassionate world.

This week, I invite you to reflect on these questions:

  • How can you practice mindfulness and “fall in love” with each moment in your daily life?
  • How does your love for specific people connect you to a larger sense of universal love?
  • How can love inspire you to take action for justice and create a better world?

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the light of love—a light that ignites passion and inspires action. Together, we’ll discover how to remain grounded in love, moment by moment, as we work towards a brighter future.

With thoughtful reflection,
Rev. F. Vernon Wright V
