The Nature of Nurture

In DNA cell biology and Darwinian evolution, we distinguish between nature and nurture. We inherit some of our biological traits, such as eye color and hair color, simply by inheritance. But some of our biological traits can be “switched on” based on the way we are nurtured (or not). Some scholars of Charles Darwin have begun to suggest that “Survival of the Fittest” was originally meant to be “Survival of the Fit.” Species thrive not by dominating their way, but by fitting into an ecological niche.  Nature does nurture.

Of course, Native Americans have long known of the concept of “Mother Nature.”

As we look to Mother’s Day this Sunday, how do we best attune ourselves to nature so that we might better nurture? What is our “better nature”
