Claim Your Power
Led by Rev. F. Vernon Wright V (he, him)
Control has seized the national agenda. The truth is, few of us have much control. Ultimately, we may have none. We can choose the illusion of control, or we can choose love. Join us this Sunday as we explore together what it means to choose love over control in our lives- what impact that might have on our happiness as individuals, the goodness of our society, and the well-being of our earth and our fellow species.
The Musical Theme is “Modern Songs of Protest”
The 1960s and 1970s saw an explosive emergence of protest messages and calls for peaceful resistance broadcast through music. Across genres—folk, rock, R&B, soul, early punk, reggae, and funk—musicians gave voice to a people striving for change. Their songs inspired, connected, and united, challenging unjust laws, tearing down entrenched status quos, and sharply criticizing elected leaders’ character, conduct, and policies.
The issues they sang about did not vanish on December 31, 1979. We know all too well how they persist today. Fortunately, the voices for justice didn’t fall silent; they grew louder. As new generations rose up, the music shifted. Often angrier, more frustrated, and less polite, but yet no less urgent. These songs explicitly challenge not just the forces that continued to spark outrage, but all of us: Do something. Be the solution. Be the change you want to see.
