Frederick Douglass was one of the most famous abolitionists in the 1800s who knew the horrors of slavery firsthand. Douglass originally identified as a church-going Christian. Yet his experiences as a slave, plus the influence of his friendships with Unitarian abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Rev. Theodore Parker, began to reshape his personal theology. Anthony Pinn, one of our faith movement’s leading Humanist theologians, himself also African American, helps us trace Frederick Douglass’s spiritual journey from traditional Christianity to Humanism in his struggles for human dignity and justice.
