Speak-Easy topic: Workers and Religion

Speak-Easy Discussion Group, Sunday, March 12

art, overlapping voice balloonsAs of this year, the Supreme Court announced the next religious privilege case they’ll take up — Groff v. DeJoy. Groff, a postal worker, was disciplined for refusing to work on Sundays. He attempted to claim a religious exemption, but lower courts have long recognized this would impose “undue hardship” on the U.S. Post Office.

In the late 1970s, the Supreme Court ruled that requiring employers to rewrite work schedules to give religious people preferential access to select days off unconstitutionally privileged religion and unfairly burdened both the employer and the employees required to cover those shifts.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on April 18, 2023, on Groff v. DeJoy.

Calm, clear, and collected discussions on current “hot” topics, as well as other issues from a Unitarian Universalist perspective.  We meet on the second and fourth Sundays of the month BEFORE regular Sunday services, from 8:45 am to 9:45 am in Harmony Hall.

So bring a cup of coffee/tea and come speak your mind and share your views in a safe, non-threatening atmosphere.
